This Clever Mom Creates an Easy LEGO Car Display in Minutes

Posted by Stacy Randall

If your home is anything like mine, LEGO cars seem to multiply overnight. They race across tables, line up on shelves, and occasionally crash-land under the sofa. We have countless built pieces on display, a drawer full of minifigs, and even a container dedicated to LEGO wheels. Why so many wheels? Because, by far, LEGO vehicles outnumber everything else. The thing is, my son rarely finishes a build and leaves it be. He very much likes to play with his […]

Lake Lewisia #1320

When an unfortunate incident with a wind storm and a food truck took out one of the oldest sacred trees in the area, the magical network in which it was an anchor faded and surged as the rest of the anchors tried to take up the sudden slack. Around town, people watched crystal balls dim then turn beacon-bright and cauldrons chill before boiling over. While occult arborists would spend the week removing the felled tree and planting a sapling replacement, repair experts would be stuck recalibrating magical tools and replacing blown crystals.

Wednesday Reading Meme

What I Just Finished Reading

Once again, nothing. I have had a migraine for 48 hours and counting. (It comes and goes, which is why I am typing this post now. But you can tell I have one, because I clearly don't understand narrative enough to be reading comics and/or am too tired to type much.)

What I'm Reading Now

Comics Wednesday!

Fantastic Four #4, Ultimate Spider-Man #22, Ultimate Spider-Man Incursion #5, Ultimates #17 )

What I'm Reading Next

Hey, whoever it was who wanted me to review the sequel(s) to Fourth Wing and I said I wasn't going to do that because only the first book was on Kindle Unlimited and the library ebook waitlist was long and there was no way I was paying money for anything in this series?

Yeah, so books 2 and 3 are on Kindle Unlimited now, so at some point when I can stand to read lengthy original fiction books again (I do not know when this will be) I am willing to read and review terrible fantasy books because I love dragons too much for my own good. Clearly.

So this will probably not be the next thing, but it's on the list.

IKEA Finds: ‘Tis the Season for the Cutest Cookie Tins

Posted by Stacy Randall

IKEA has done it again — turning everyday essentials into irresistible holiday finds. On a recent stroll through the store, I stumbled upon the new VINTERFINT collection, and tucked among the ribbons and wrapping paper were the stars of the show: three delightfully festive cookie tins shaped like Santa and his snowman friends. They’re the kind of small-but-special IKEA treasures that make you smile instantly — charming and affordable. Part décor, part storage, and 100% joy-inducing. Ideal for stashing cookies, […]

Lake Lewisia #1319

A local potter is asking for help, particularly from video game enthusiasts, with their latest project in repaired objects. Caches of pots have been hidden around town--and yes, some of them have small prizes inside, of course--and volunteer adventurers are being asked to find and smash them with gleeful abandon. The broken pots won’t go to waste, as they will be used for kintsugi and mosaic work that will pay homage to dungeon crawling tropes and the economics of destruction in storytelling.

AWS outage

DW is seeing some issues due to today's Amazon outage. For right now it looks like the site is loading, but it may be slow. Some of our processes like notifications and journal search don't appear to be running and can't be started due to rate limiting or capacity issues. DW could go down later if Amazon isn't able to improve things soon, but our services should return to normal when Amazon has cleared up the outage.

Edit: all services are running as of 16:12 CDT, but there is definitely still a backlog of notifications to get through.

Edit 2: and at 18:20 CDT everything's been running normally for about the last hour.

She Bought an IKEA Bookcase — Then Turned It Into the Cutest Kids’ Art Desk

Posted by Stacy Randall

Where there’s imagination, there’s usually a mess, and that’s not always a bad thing. Jeannine Bietau @modernity.focus said she originally picked up the new IKEA BERGIG bookcase for books. But inspiration struck, and she simply had to turn it into this cute, functional art station for the kids’ room. The BERGIG book display unit is now a charming, kid-friendly art desk that keeps the mess (mostly) contained and the creativity flowing. Turn a Bookshelf Into a Kids Art Desk What […]

Fresh(-ish) Far Side Cartoons

Posted by David Malki !

Back in 2020, an official website was launched for Gary Larson and his comic The Far Side, which until then had only existed online as unofficial fan archives and so on.

Along with the site, which reruns a smattering of daily cartoons, there was a section called “New Stuff” in which Larson described the joy of learning to draw with a digital tablet for the first time.

Since then, the “New Stuff” section has been very infrequently updated with new cartoons — including one quite recently. It’s lovely to see more work from Larson; for many of us, The Far Side is like an old friend.

I also recommend looking through the “Sketchbooks” section to see a ton more proto-comics and draft ideas, many of which might easily have become a classic during the comic’s run.

Done This Week

Oh, I have had to witness way too many dick swinging contests this week. The details are unimportant and too exhausting to recount. I finally resorted, for the work-related bits, to summing up the situation as “nothing was damaged and no one was hurt, and that’s all I’ll say.” Which is damning with faint praise, and intentionally so.

For the personal bits, all I’ll say is, buddy, if you find yourself needing to flirt that aggressively to get that little response, consider that you ain’t shit and should stop embarrassing yourself.

There was a bit of an incident with my tablet, wherein it got dropped in a mud puddle. It’s okay. I dipped it in a bit of water to rinse the grit out of the charging port and speaker holes, then turned to good ol’ 99% IPA to dry it out and make it stop complaining that moisture was detected. Still, I decided I needed to make it more of an indoor device--I already had to replace it at the beginning of the year, and I don’t fancy doing it again.

Since the reason I had it with me outside was to listen to podcasts, I went looking for an app to use on my phone instead. I’m now using Pocket Casts rather happily. It took ages to re-up all my subscriptions and download the episodes I had on the tablet again, but I’m finally there. I’ve had to resign myself to having my phone on me more than I ever used to (and now two of them because of my work phone), so I guess this was one of the last holdouts. On the plus side, I can listen to podcasts easily while at work, which is a nice treat.

I was very happy to get out my painting supplies for a little project yesterday. It’s been a long time since I did any art-art, rather than fiber arts. I’d like to get back into drawing.

Had a good rain storm early in the week and then went back to mildly warm temps. Oh, October, you’re so much better than the months that came before you.

Sunday Secrets

Posted by Frank

Hi Frank,

I’m from around same area as this person. Growing up me and my friend would read secrets together and talk about them in our small corner of the world.

After highschool we lost touch with one another but almost every Sunday when I pull up PostSecret I would stop and think about them for a second.

Where were they? What were they thinking of? Did a certain secret envoke joy, sorrow, longing?

So friend in our little precious part of the world. I do they when they check PostSecret that they think of you and what your relationship meant to them.

I know because I’m the same.
