Well, that wasn't in the kids' version

For my last book of the year, I do indeed seem to be reading Pegasus: An Easy Ancient Greek Reader. This retells the story of Pegasus in very easy Ancient Greek with basically every word on the page in a facing glossary.

I had a big ol' book of Greek myths when I was a kid -- not one of the standard ones -- and of course my favorite story was the one about Bellerophon bridling Pegasus and then fighting the chimera. Because, you know. Horsie. It had, I think, a full-color plate for every story (this is why I suspect it wasn't one of the standard books because it was not heavily-illustrated). Now that I have looked around, I think it was this -- Myths Every Child Should Know -- which seems, uh, pretty obscure. I found a nicer PDF though.)

I remember being in, like, second grade and having painstakingly made and illustrated my own "book" of Pegasus, retelling the story in my own words, for some kind of school project, which I bound by having my parents help me wrap pieces of cardboard in pegasus-themed wrapping paper and then duct-taping the spine together. I definitely remember using my extremely fancy Prismacolor colored pencils to render the golden bridle. So I am deeply familiar with it... but only this one exact version.

Anyway, the story in Myths Every Child Should Know definitely did NOT mention that Bellerophon was in Lycia fighting the chimera because he'd been exiled from Corinth for killing a rando guy named Belleron -- apparently "Bellerophon" means "murderer of Belleron," and his previous name was Horse Mind (Hipponous) -- and he ended up in Argos as a guest of the king who ritually cleansed him of the miasma of his murder ([personal profile] lysimache says this is a cultural concept that everyone knows but I have never heard of this in my life) but then the queen decided she wanted to fuck Bellerophon and when he turned her down, she went to her husband the king and said Bellerophon had wanted to fuck her and he should have this guy killed. Of course she did.

So at this point in the story, Bellerophon is being sent to Lycia with a letter telling King Iobates (the wife's father) to have him killed, because the king of Argos can't just kill him because he's a guest he has ritually cleansed and eaten meals with and killing him is just Not Done. However, it's cool to send him to your father-in-law and have him kill him. That's fine. I love hospitality.

Apparently this part was not a Myth Every Child Should Know. Anyway! Looking forward to more unanticipated sex and violence!

Lake Lewisia #1345

When he informed his friend and weekend host that there was a squirrel angrily chittering in a live trap cage in the backyard, he had not entirely expected the smug "serves Mrs. Wilmott right" he heard in response. "Just imagine the persistence of a bird feeder-raiding squirrel and the nosiness of a little old biddy next door, then make her a witch," she explained as she looked out the kitchen window, which had heavy privacy curtains like everywhere else in the house. "She's safe in the shade, so I think I'll let her stew for a bit, and maybe she’ll think better of snooping while I have a 'gentleman caller' staying over," she announced loudly, which set off a new wave of furious squeaking.

Bolted! Game – Designer Diary

Posted by David Malki !

My game Bolted! has under 48 hours left on Kickstarter, and I’ve written a “Designer Diary” about some of the game’s development process — parts of which which longtime readers may recognize!

I like sharing this kind of stuff, even though it might spotlight some of my more doofus choices and missteps, because I trust that some people will find the process interesting, and take heart at how a polished outcome can be the result of a long, winding, and setback-filled process.

Does that mean that the final result is definitionally awesome? Well, yes, of course.

This is mainly written for an audience new to the game and new to my work generally. I submitted it to BoardGameGeek for their blog of designer diaries (which will reach an audience that mostly has never heard of me).

I don’t actually know if they’ll publish it, but I wanted to make sure it was published SOMEWHERE, so while I wait to hear back from them, here it is!

Bolted! A Game of Creative Necromancy

When you combine different things, sometimes the result is a chemical reaction. Other times, it’s a surprising creative breakthrough.

I’m the author of the comic strip Wondermark, which is created collage-style out of vintage illustrations. So I’ve long been a champion of “creative re-combination.”

Making comics from collage has both freedoms and limitations. I get to hitch a ride on beautiful artwork from ages past, but I’m also constrained in storytelling (to a degree) by the images I can find.

It means the artwork itself is a creative collaborator. The gestures, expressions, and style of the artwork inform the stories that I tell with them…

Tiff & Eve Crossover Comic

Posted by David Malki !

This comic was created as part of a “Secret Santa” comics exchange on Reddit. These characters are Tiff and Eve, and this strip was written by Fran Sundblad, the author of the comic Tiff 🏳️‍⚧️ & Eve, and rendered in Wondermark style by me.

Lake Lewisia #1344

The trouble--one of the troubles, anyway--with locking up one’s monstrous offspring in the attic is that one must then tell less-monstrous offspring, “Your brother is a monster and we keep him in there so he can’t hurt anyone,” and they decide they quite like monsters. Then you tell them, “So you must never, ever open this door,” and they decide to whisper through the keyhole and pass notes under the door. Then you tell them, “Family secrets have to stay in the family,” and they decide they and their monstrous sibling will simply have to find a new family in that case.

Wednesday Reading Meme

What I Just Finished Reading

Katie Chandler, Backhanded Compliments: A f/f tennis rivals-to-lovers romance that's also a name-on-wrist soulmate story, because I guess this is just what Real Books are like now. It's... okay? The smut was actually decent, and there was some interesting worldbuilding in here (everyone visits the archaeological museum of Naples and talks about the classical views of soulmates), but I think the author should have built up the rivalry before having them actually realize they were soulmates, because pre-existing character investment is not happening in original fiction, and it wasn't really clear to me why they couldn't just be together.

What I'm Reading Now

Comics Wednesday!

Alien vs. Captain America #2, Avengers #33 )

What I'm Reading Next

I have to read one more book this year so that I do not fail my pitiful Goodreads challenge. [personal profile] lysimache says I should finish reading this novella about Pegasus written for students learning Ancient Greek, but my bookmark fell out and I don't remember where I was. Also I forgot the word for "bridle."

Lake Lewisia #1343

With the weather taking a sharp turn to colder daytime temperatures, we are happy to announce that Old Man Anatole has been able to emerge from his yearly hibernation in the cryostasis lab at the community college. Trapped on a mountain unknown centuries ago, Anatole was found frozen by local archaeologists and was revived somewhat successfully, apart from his inability to survive in warmer temperatures. When you see him wandering coatless about town, stop to say hello and tell him about something pleasant for you from the past year, as he always enjoys catching up on what he misses during his seasonal sleep.

Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Steve Rogers/Tony Stark
Characters: Steve Rogers, Tony Stark

Summary: After the defeat of the Progenitor, Tony is surprised to find that Steve has changed his mind and would now like to take him up on his offer to relax in the hot springs. Steve, more depressed than Tony has ever seen him, would like to compare notes on their respective judgments and find out how Tony's been doing in his newly-sober life. He'd also like to reveal a few long-held secrets about his feelings for Tony -- and there's more than one surprise here.

Remember me? I used to write fic! This is mostly unedited, but also it's been sitting here for about three years and I mostly just wanted it off my hard drive. Thanks to Blossom for cheerleading this while I was writing it.

This is about 90,000 words of meta disguised as fic, about Judgment Day and about how much I hate Cantwell's Iron Man run. Steve and Tony spend this entire story conversing in the Avengers Mountain hot springs. Then they fuck. That is the actual plot. There is also a short epilogue from Steve's POV, coming soon. They go to a different room for that one.

(When I say "short," I mean "35,000 words.")

Done This Week

Ugh. Multiple appointments this week, all of which got rescheduled, sometimes more than once. My dental cleaning revealed a cavity, so I had to go back to get that dealt with. My regular follow-up for my HRT was a bit of a fiasco. They were obviously too busy and didn’t actually have time to provide me with competent care. Normally, I don’t need anything in particular; I’m just showing up so they can renew my prescriptions. But I had actual questions this time. No one was really listening to me, as they kept misunderstanding what I was talking about, and they didn’t have time to do anything for me anyway.

So I have another appointment, which I needed anyway to get the last round of HPV vax. Maybe that will go better… Perhaps they will also have the injection supply kits I use (since my pharmacy can’t manage to fill them in a timely or accurate manner), which they were out of. And apparently now I have to have at least a telehealth appointment to get the results of my blood test for my T levels, which is a new policy. Considering it takes me over an hour to get to them, I wish they would be a bit less cavalier about making me come back multiple times.

No one’s head is really in the game at work right now, least of all mine. There are various holiday activities happening, and I think we’re all just skating from one to the next until we get to our days off. Which doesn’t mean I haven’t been busy, because nonsense is constantly afoot. I’m just not sure I’m especially competent right now. ≧ ﹏ ≦

Lewisia: 3 new pieces written

Day job: 42.5 hours, not counting the 1.5hr of consultation via text

Crafting: converted 1 more sticker into a magnet, repaired more socks

Gardening: harvested pumpkins, garden club post

Reading: The Faggots & Their Friends Between Revolutions by Larry Mitchell (a sort of fairy tale [pun intended] of the ebb and flow of the fortunes of the collective queer community, interesting reading in these strange times), The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle (I only saw the movie for the first time as an adult and it did not have the magic it might have if I saw it at a younger age, but the book was perfectly lovely, he does truly gorgeous things with language)

Watching: Jurassic World: Rebirth (huh...well, it was a better movie than the last one [low bar] but it still feels like they’ve lost the thread--I like the series because dinosaurs, which seem to take a backseat to other concerns in the modern movies)

Listening: Napichideh by B-Band (“Kavire Del” was one of the all-time best finds from KEXP for me years ago, and I finally managed to obtain the full album)

Aftermarket Parts: six month follow-up

Clock Mouse: 1208 words

Other: dentist...twice...

Sunday Secrets

Posted by Frank

I opened PostSecret this morning and I think “well thats relatable – I hate Christmas too”

Then “wait, that’s my handwriting — I made that secret!”  I sent that postcard many years ago.  So strange that it wasn’t postmarked.

Over the years, I have sent you 5 postcards, and you have now published all 5.  I feel incredibly seen and I thank you for that.  I still hate Christmas for many reasons and that’s not going to change. Skipping the holiday season is not an option but I would in a heartbeat.   I am hosting a brunch today for 14 people and I will put on my happy face and make the next 11 days magical for everyone.
I can’t wait for December 26 when I can take down all these decorations and stop pretending.
