Some truly epic thank you's are due, so here they are!
Firstly, I must thank and applaud
ellegen for the contribution of her fantastic artwork, which enhances the story so much and is also just excellent on its own terms. The sheer volume and quality of work she did here went far above and beyond the call, to the point where, when I offered her my fanmix for inspiration, she whipped up a cover for it in something like a day. In short, she's amazing, and everyone should mosey on over to her journal to give her the praise she deserves. I can’t even tell you the number of times I saw that she had updated the draft with something new, and proceeded to flail with excitement and amazement when I checked to see what it was. I couldn’t have asked for a better collaborator--thank you, darling, I had the best time working with you!
I also must thank
karakalyn for her betaing. She didn’t even freak out when I sent her a truly epic email from hell about what I was going to write about, without actually writing any of the story yet because I’m a terrible person. Thank you for your patience and help!
As for notes on the story:
I’m not so into story commentary--generally I’m of the opinion that if the story doesn’t speak for itself then I haven’t done my job correctly. I would at this point just like to clarify, however, that the embedded cipher is not essential to the understanding of the story, so if you don’t feel like slavishly copying down all of it as it appears you won’t miss anything important. It is, however, a fairly self-explanatory code, so once you have the data it should be very easy to figure out how to go about cracking it. And, I dunno, I was really pleased to be able to stick it in because narratively, it didn’t really fit anywhere, but it does make things a little more interesting. So I hope it’s a cool Easter egg for those who take the time. Also: if you figure it out and the cipher doesn't work, let me know. I tried to be really careful to highlight all of the relevant letters, but I might have missed one.
The only other thing I’ll say is that I loved writing this story to pieces, because despite a lot of flailing and throwing ridiculous ideas at my computer, desperately praying that some would stick, it ended up being a really fun, and at times a really spontaneous process. There were indeed a few moments of “pure inspiration”, as Cobb would say, and that’s always my favorite part. So I hope you enjoy the result!

Date: 9 Feb 2011 13:43 (UTC)As for the code, the hardest work and the most essential part is finding all of the letters in the right order. If you miss one, everything that comes after will remain incomprehensible. But if you find all of them, they should go into the website's decoder fine--I know at least one person has done it successfully. If you're looking for the key, then I will simply hint that it's in the story as a key as well :)
