Every phone, and attuned crystal, and carrier pigeon message capsule sent out an urgent update to residents and visitors alike: a very interesting patch of purple flowers had been spotted along the fence line of the baseball diamond, which no one had thus far identified. People hastily left work early, while others packed up children and pets to make a pilgrimage to the field. News crews consulted with botanists and gardeners, while poets and painters were given prime viewing locations from which to observe and memorialize the utterly mundane, impossibly lovely discovery.

Mid-century modern trends prove that good design never goes out of style. That’s why it’s so easy to find the aesthetic in current pieces. Many of today’s furniture retailers feature items that blend timeless charm with contemporary touches. Likewise, a large number of IKEA pieces align with mid-century modern design, thanks to qualities such as clean lines and practical functionality. However, designers of these pieces take things a step further, reimagining them to meet the needs of today’s consumers while […]

“You can try them on yourself,” she offered when her friend expressed sneering disbelief that her positive outlook really did stem from a set of magic, rose-colored glasses. He slipped them on, and her smiling face was bathed in blushing tones as she told him, “Wow, you look like a stylish adventurer in those.” The compliment softened his grouchy mood, his friend’s optimism suddenly seemed charming instead of foolish, and the glasses’ magic worked just as she had intended.

Whoever coined the phrase “less is more” surely wasn’t talking about storage. I mean, the more ways to organize your stuff, the better, because it helps you maintain a tidy, stress-free home. However, it’s also understandable that you want to preserve your paycheck as much as possible. That’s why storage hacks get so much buzz, and IKEA pieces are at the heart of many of these DIYs. Some popular items turn up more often than others. For example, you’ll find […]

IKEA kitchen cabinets aren’t just for the kitchen; they turn up everywhere, from under the stairs to a bathroom vanity. Celine @victoryxmatilda decided to give her METOD cabinets a makeover, creating a streamlined showpiece that gets everybody talking. When it comes to IKEA projects, bench and storage hacks are plentiful. But at the same time, they each have a unique look, utilize different IKEA collections, etc. It’s always fun to see how creators reimagine pieces into something similar, but do […]

As the season meanders on, you may notice unexpected additions to your garden in the form of vines you had not previously tripped over and stalks where there had been empty space. These are simply ghost plants, drawing closer to their living kindred as harvest time does as well. They mean no harm, though we recommend against allowing any particularly active squash tendrils from anchoring to you while you garden: they may not be too selective about what they guide into the afterlife.

If your morning doesn’t officially start until coffee hits your system, the last thing you need is a caffeine crisis every time you open the cabinet. Between tumbling Tassimo pods, unruly K-cups, and stacked boxes, it’s enough to test anyone’s pre-coffee patience. IKEA hacker Evi decided to ease her morning coffee routine and created a handy coffee pod storage system from FÖRSÄSONG cable organizers. Now, the discs stay nice and tidy, contained on the back of a cabinet door and […]

I took Monday off work--originally to allow for any grief-related needs, but ultimately to physically recover from last week’s bonanza of nonsense. Even so, this week was a real struggle. The worse things get, the more I feel the compulsion to be on social media to stay abreast of just how illegal my existence is. But the more I’m on social media, the worse I feel regardless of actual practical changes. So then I feel more paranoid and want to stay on social media like I’m keeping lookout from the battlements. &c &c unto the grave.

I feel like I need to be writing “if I disappear” posts, and I don’t know how realistic that impulse is. Those are conversations I am having with my mum. We’ve already got things set up pretty well--relative to normal life and death events--for either of us to get access to everything that belongs to the other. I don’t know if that would hold up to governmental unpersoning of me, of course.

It is perhaps very on-brand of me to be more worried about how my family would be taken care of if I got sent to the camps than I am about my own fate. ¯\(°_o)/¯

I am aware that I am experiencing existential dread right now. I also seem to be dissociating pretty hard, though, so everything feels like it’s happening on the other side of a pane of glass. I’m reading a lot--not just enthusiastically but frantically, which tends to happen when I’m dissociating for long periods.

We had a couple days of half-assed attempts at rain. Now its heating up again. September might be my least favorite month, were it not for Autumn Equinox and the apple season getting underway.

Lewisia: 3 new pieces written

Day job: 34 hours, with Monday off

Cleaning: moved a couple of the horses’ tire feeders around and made plans for repairing the damaged one

Gardening: garden club post, succulent club meeting

Reading: Don’t Let the Forest In by CG Drews (allowed my Libby app to recommend queer horror, received a fucked up little thing that was somehow exactly what I wanted to listen to just then), A House with Good Bones by T. Kingfisher (very unsettling, thank you, though I find the persistent skepticism of the narrator tips over into frustrating for me at times), Lost in the Moment and Found by Seanan McGuire (another Wayward Children book, another time volunteering to have my heart ripped out)

Watching: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Listening: Harvest Season - Second Cutting by Alexander James Adams (man, I love folk music, I’ve been saving this one to listen to closer to the equinox)

Clock Mouse: 1503 words
