‘Tis the season to frantically figure out the perfect presents for friends, family, coworkers, and even the family pet. But wait! You still need money for those pesky bills. Onlookers would state that the branch had let out a crack like thunder when it broke but still fell too fast for anyone to react, let alone get out of the way. She would state that the falling branch, still thick with autumn leaves, did not so much bash her over the head as whisk her up into a tiny arboreal village in crisis after the fall. The discrepancy between the adventurous weeks she experienced and the frantic minutes onlookers spent freeing her unconscious body from the tangle were not something she could explain, but by then, she was more concerned with getting back to her newfound leafy home than with the petty reality from which she came.

Now, here’s a hack that really makes you do a double-take. I didn’t even recognize the after-pic. Jenna Townsend (@touch.of.townsend) wanted a “lived-in apothecary look” without the high price tag that typically comes with it. She transformed IKEA’s basic TARVA 6-drawer dresser into an antique-style showstopper that looks like a completely different piece of furniture. It’s also relatively simple to do if you have basic DIY skills and patience. Jenna offers this inspirational wisdom to other DIY dreamers: “With the […]

The icicle crops are beginning to grow along rooflines around town, so please watch out for the blue markers designating cultivated areas and avoid breaking or contaminating them. Unlike icicles forming on tree branches and other wild locations, which should only be harvested by experienced foragers who can identify those safe to eat, cultivated icicles can be purchased and used for a number of winter treats. Later in the season, when they've ripened drip by drip, look out for flavor-coated icicle pops at Zelena Mishka.

Done This Week

scrubjayspeaks: hand holding pen over notebook (done this week)
[personal profile] scrubjayspeaks
If nothing else, it being a short week improved matters. Work did dump some foolish nonsense on me, because no one can plan properly. But they’re going to get whatever they get in the time available, and I am not going to stress about it. Also, the building decided to have various crises, such that it was down to the wire if I would have to stay late on Wednesday and then again if I would have to come in on Saturday. *sigh*

On this, the last day of the month, I find myself disappointed with my NaClYoHo Month progress. I did get some good work done on the piano, which had been my priority. But I never got around to doing anything in the bathroom, which needs attention whether I want to deal with it or not. I do like the spirit of the event--little bits of progress daily--but this did not end up being a very compatible November for daily things. I’m just going to try to continue picking at things as I can over the course of the winter.

I recently acquired some soundtracks to various video games, and it has given me a craving for some old friends. So I dusted off my PS2 and got it reconnected to the TV so I can play the .hack series from the beginning. This seems to be a less well-known franchise (games, manga, light novels, multiple anime series), but it was my absolute favorite around end of high school/college age. It’s a near-future scifi story of a game within the game whose events are bleeding into the offline world in dangerous ways. This first series (as compared to .hack//G.U.) is very glitchpunk, if you will.

The downgrade in tech (and my janky ass controller) cannot dim my enduring affection for these characters and their world.

It’s been increasingly cold. Not much by way of frost, yet, as things are rapidly drying out after the rain and no real chance of more in the near future. Everything is developing a thick layer of grass or moss, to each according to their tendencies. Mum reports multiple sightings of a fox in the fields, which is a rare visitor for us.

Lewisia: 3 new pieces written

Day job: 25.5 hours

Cooking: (apart from the many Thanksgiving foods) udon noodles from scratch

Cleaning: hunting unsuccessfully for my spare PS2 controller...man, I’ve got to get to the oldest storage someday...

Gardening: gathered some seeds, pulled excess ice plant

Reading: the Andy Serkis production of The Silmarillion (the part of me that grew up reading books of mythology really enjoyed it, while the part of me in charge of memory wants to strangle JRRT for all these fucking names)

Watching: Knives Out (what a fun movie! holy shit, that’s the most pure fun I’ve had in ages)

Listening: The Longest Weekend by TWRP (what a perfectly lovely album--a song about critters! a song about breakfast! a song about not wanting a vacation to end! “It’s been a heavy year//It's been tough, it's been weird”--I feel you, bro)

Playing: .hack//infection

Clock Mouse: 1315 words

Hello, friends! It's about to be December again, and you know what that means: the fact I am posting this actually before December 1 means [staff profile] karzilla reminded me about the existence of linear time again. Wait, no -- well, yes, but also -- okay, look, let me back up and start again: it's almost December, and that means it's time for our annual December holiday points bonus.

The standard explanation: For the entire month of December, all orders made in the Shop of points and paid time, either for you or as a gift for a friend, will have 10% of your completed cart total sent to you in points when you finish the transaction. For instance, if you buy an order of 12 months of paid time for $35 (350 points), you'll get 35 points when the order is complete, to use on a future purchase.

The fine print and much more behind this cut! )

Thank you, in short, for being the best possible users any social media site could possibly ever hope for. I'm probably in danger of crossing the Sappiness Line if I haven't already, but you all make everything worth it.

On behalf of Mark, Jen, Robby, and our team of awesome volunteers, and to each and every one of you, whether you've been with us on this wild ride since the beginning or just signed up last week, I'm wishing you all a very happy set of end-of-year holidays, whichever ones you celebrate, and hoping for all of you that your 2026 is full of kindness, determination, empathy, and a hell of a lot more luck than we've all had lately. Let's go.

Petty Aunt Pie

This recipe has been a family secret for 100 years. It’s a great pie, and deserves to be shared. My petty, vindictive aunts don’t deserve to keep it to themselves. I love and miss you, Grandma!

[PostSecret Facebook Comments]
My “Petty Aunt Pie” just came out of the oven. Looks and smells delicious. Can’t wait to eat it! I miss my Grandma too. I understand why you posted.

I have this theory that people hoard good recipes to maintain friendships with people.

I make this pie every year since I saw the secret! Delicious. Squeeze liquid out of the grated apples first, though.

I want a thread of forbidden family recipes. I’ll go first. Mother puts almond extract in the buttercream frosting. That’s the mystery flavor.

We put some of Mom’s recipes on her memorial cards for people to take with them (of course, we saved a couple of the most loved for just the family).

It sounds great! I hope it brings you joy that it will be made all over the place and everyone will think of your grandma.

The first keepsake I look for when a loved one dies – the recipe box.

Read the full article from the Today Show website.
What’s that little extra flavor in this? Is it pettiness? Is it an extra pinch of cinnamon? Who knows. Either way, savor each bite knowing it’s pissing off someone’s aunt somewhere.
[Preparation Tips]

I made two versions of the Petty Aunt Pie [see chart] and distributed pieces around town as I did some errands. Some went to friends, others I gave to complete strangers, including a guy holding a sign that said “hungry and homeless”. Next time I’ll carry some forks with me.

Hi, Frank,
The pie is my secret. I didn’t intentionally time my secret to coincide with Thanksgiving, but it seems to be kismet. My heart is so full of joy that my grandma’s pie is going to be on Thanksgiving tables.

No wind stirred the lake that day, as the last autumn leaves fell, crisp and cupped, to the water. They scudded across the surface, shivering the glass of it, toward the oddly solid reflection of a tree on the far bank. No one could see the tree spirits captaining the little boats, but there was an invisible migration underway as they left the trees of this dimension in peace to sleep away the winter.
